Online improv is better than an oyster.
Flat Improv - Online improv classes, jams, livestreams
Dear revolutionary improv friends,

It's March now, here we are! We made it. Good job, us!

So I have improv resources, improv jams, improv classes, improv podcasts - lots of stuff. All of it online, and accessible from where YOU are.

That's right: we can do and enjoy improv from anywhere. Meeting access needs. Great.

I'm hosting a NEW JAM linked below. I will be posting jams on FlatImprov Facebook as well now, so follow that if you want links and reminders between these newsletters. I also post on FlatImprov Instagram. I also run content and shows on FlatImprov  Twitch.

Improv Resources

More stuff on the Neurodiversity & Improv project on Substack. This podcast and written article series is applicable to ALL neurotypes. Plus, if you are improvising you are teaching or doing scenes with people who have a different neurotype.

So, it applies to you. And it could maybe help make improv easier. Neat!

If you want extra bonus resources, consider pledging the substack. If there's enough interest, I will.

Episode 13: Improv and Being Misunderstood, Part 1

PODCAST: Learn about the social communication style differences between humans that can affect how you are understood or misunderstood in and outside of scenes. Research! Science! Humans!

Finding the unusual thing (and communicating better in scenes)

ARTICLE: It's hard to notice the unusual at the top of an improv scene. Learn when and how to do it! Even if you're unusual too, like me! For EVERYONE: how to communicate better with your scene partners.

Neurodiversity & Improv Podcast page (with subscribe box and contact options):

More episodes out of the World's Nerdiest Improv Show (WNIS) (weenis) with Katrina Charles. This show is hosted in a fully custom immersive environment, and we make some ads that roll in the middle.

This is also offered as a PODCAST if you prefer to listen that way.

You can also see just the comedy ads we release here:

Recent eps:

Episode 8: Potato & Veg Noodle Soup

Episode 9: Creamy Curry Soup with Zucchini and Potatoes

Episode 10: Potato Carrot Soup (ft. Luke Bovard)

NEXT LIVE SHOW: March 7 featuring guest Hill Kane at WGIS TWITCH

Keeping it relatable, but heightening, can be a fun, quick, easy way to create new ones.

Creating characters from the inside out keeps them relatable. But you can still be creative, have fun, and position yourself as the voice of reason or the fool. Get exercises helping you learn new ways of doing this. We'll explore POV, physical, and vocals too.

Online Improv Jams
Upcoming Improv Jams

Improv Jams are a fun way to get in reps, have fun, and meet new friends! They are (most often) NOT CLASSES with teaching, but instead a time to have a space to practice your skills with someone keeping the event safe and balanced. Maybe try something new. They are friendly for those new to improv to see what it's all about too!

Remember to support the schools/orgs who host free jams (etc) you attend by going to the odd class at the school, with the host running your jams, or making a small donation to help with their overhead. Supporting the host keeps the jams running and/or free!

WGIS Long Form Improv Jams

Online Long Form Improv Jams from WGIS (Weegis) EVERY Friday at 11am and 5pm PT. I host some of these jams. I also post them weekly in the WGIS Facebook and Discord.

Real time section

Welcome to the end of the newsletter. You made it!

Improv is online, but it's only going to remain online if you help it stay here! Take classes, go to jams, encourage others to try, too! Help dispel some of the many myths about online improv. Let's band together to keep this stuff alive!

If it's possible for you, consider supporting labor intensive and costly work for our community to help it keep going! ANY of these tells me it's worth doing and helps so much. Thank you! Honestly I just kinda want to know some of you are out there and this is... useful?

  • Neurodiversity & Improv Substack (subscribe for free, or pledge. If enough folx are interested in pledging I will do bonus material for paid subscribers & open up a private discussion community on neurodivergent experiences in improv. Maybe a monthly livestream with a roundtable?)
  • Buymeacoffee or Ko-fi (one-time donation)
  • BEST WAY: Take my class or ask me to coach and/or direct your online show (classes are all online & I'd love to see you!) This helps online improv survive too! Yay!
  • If you can't afford, totally understood! Follow me, share, comment on a post, click "like", talk to friends and bring them into the fun, etc. Links just below.

my warmest of regards and salutations,

Holy shit you are still reading? Hi! I started my tomatoes and peppers under lights on a heatmat here in my basement. I'm growing 3 different types of tomatoes and 2 different peppers so I can isolate them enough to seed save in my garden. My garden is about 3/4 of an acre.
